I'm Stuck!

We have all been there!

  • Tired of the same ol' food week in and week out
  • Stuck with the same workouts and feel bored
  • Can't seem to kick the sweet, afternoon cravings
  • Don't know how to motive {insert important person here} to be more healthy
Good news: You are NOT alone!  I {we} are here to help!

I will be doing a Vlog post next week that will be all about answering your questions.
(For my grandma, and those less tech-savvy, a vlog is a video log. Video+LOG=VLOG)

This is where I need your help!  I know many of you out there have one, or two, or 79 different questions about this whole healthy living, clean eating, lifting heavy "stuff".  I need to know what they are.  In the comments below, please post your questions. Feel free to just be yourself or post anonymously.  It does not matter to me.  Odds are, someone else has the same question.  You will just be doing them a favor by putting on your brave pants and posting out there for the world to see.  They will thank you.  I will thank you.

From the questions, I will choose three from each category to answer.  Feel free to be generic, or specific to you/your life/your body.  My intention is to make this a regular occurrence (1x/month, currently) to help alleviate the mystery or feeling of helplessness for anyone out there feeling stuck without a clue how to change.

So come forth, brave souls!  Share your questions and insecurities with the world!

It Could Be Worse

I sit here in front of my computer, working away at my graduate classes.  I LOVE what I am doing,  I LOVE what I am learning, and I LOVE the way I am challenged each and every week to do more, be more, and live more.  In one of my courses, our assignment this week is to examine functional training.  It started out focusing on older populations, helping golfers improve their swing... very vanilla stuff.  But then, I was assigned this to watch.

Yeah.  I am inspired.  So, I dare ask: What's your excuse?  Because according to this young man, it could be worse. Is there really any more to say?

Now go.  Attack whatever obstacle is in front of you and GET SH!T DONE.

Honored and Humbled

I don't know what else to say... I am just a 32 year old mom of 3 living my own lil' life up here in Idaho, trying to be the best version of myself.  I don't compare myself to anyone else, don't worry what others think of me, and at the same time don't think that anyone else in the world would even think twice about me.  Who am I but one of 4 billion on this planet?  I am myself and I am at peace with that.  I don't seek the approval of others, just try to be the kind of woman my husband is worthy of, I want my daughters to become, and I want my son to marry.  Those are big expectations, but I strive each day to get one step closer to them.  I am by no means perfect (nor do I want to be!), but I do not accept mediocrity.  I realize there is incredible potential that I have yet to unleash.  My journey is to find new ways to expose it.  That is all I am doing.

H.I.T. Supplements
I received an email the other day about scheduling a second meeting with a local, but very promising supplement company.  I was floored they would even consider talking more in-depth about building a working relationship.  After all, who am I?  Once we sat down and spoke about philosophy, perspective, vision, goals, etc. I knew this was an incredible opportunity.  Reality check #1: Don't screw this up! I don't shy away from challenges and neither do the phenomenal people behind H.I.T. Supplements. They are incredibly focused, professional, and ambitious - all the things I am striving to become.  They are making a solid and reputable name for themselves in a market inundated with the "newest and greatest", yet they take a very sound approach to their business by developing the kind of products that speak for themselves.  Its all about quality with them. There are no short cuts, no questionable business practices or product development, no compromises.  After spending some great time discussing, I was HONORED and HUMBLED that they would be willing to take a chance on me - just a girl trying to make a name for herself in an over-saturated industry.  But they saw ME, the real ME, the ME that I am working to become.  Thank, H.I.T. Supplements, for your faith in me and allowing me the opportunity to seek this very potential I want so desperately to unleash.  You will NOT be disappointed!

On a lighter note, the hubs and I have been doing a little more socializing than normal.  I almost forgot what that was like!  How do you have a conversation with someone over the age of 9?  What do you talk about besides slumber parties, simple machines, and Wii games?  In all honesty, I found myself struggling a bit.  In my ol' days of sales and marketing, small talk was my thing.  I could chat it up with anyone from anywhere.  That is what I did 40 hours a week.  But now, I change shitstorms, help babies eat their applesauce, cut up quesadillas and color - a lot.  It felt like I lost my touch a bit.  I was caught off guard by it.  But more so,  I was caught off guard by how many people asked me about all <------THIS------> , meaning what's been going on here, in cyber-world: my blog, my sponsorship, my competitions, my training, etc.  How do all these people know???  Well, I do put it out there for the world to read, but I figured only my mom, my sister-in-law, and maybe a couple of my friends ever really paid attention.  Reality check #2: People care.  I was honored and humbled (again!) that others - meaning YOU - care about my life, my happenings, my journey.  WOW...................  Who knew?

I was taken aback by the incredible kind words of some.  Words like: inspiration, motivation, drive, passion, honesty, relatability.  These words are so strong and empowering.  Thank you, those that found anything in my blog or my life of value.  I am working hard to create a new path for myself and my family and to know that in doing so, others are benefiting as well solidifies my decision to pursue this route.  Thank you for your support, encouragement, and accountability.  It all drives me to work harder, elevate my expectations, and create things of value for YOU.  YOU are a big part of this transition for me and I appreciate any and all who are willing to take a change on me - just a girl trying to make a name for herself in the world.

Just a reminder of where YOU have helped me evolve from...

Valentine's Schmalentine's

It's Valentine's Day.  I hate this day - more than any other day in the whole entire year.

Why?

Is it because Josh Bafus broke my heart onValentine's Day my senior year of high school? No.

Is it because my husband never "lives up" to all the hype surrounding this gawd-awful holiday? No.

Is it because I am a soul-less witch of a woman with no real sense of love? .......... No ...........

So why the bah-humbug?  Hmmm...

I honestly detest this holiday because, unlike so many others, it represents OBLIGATION more than any other holiday in the year.  I look at people and watch them overload one another with false sentiment, over-priced floral arrangements, and obligatory affection that on most days is minimal at best, but frequently non-existent.

I am speaking to the pretenders.  The ones who spend $50.00 on a dozen roses, yet don't connect to the heart.  Who make dinner reservations at a fancy restaurant, have superficial small talk, obligatory sex at the end of the night, yet cease to have a conversation about the reality of their relationship. Who don't look at each other in the eye.  Who are more comfortable confiding in their friends than their spouse about their insecurities and worries in life.

I realize there are many out there who do NOT pretend on this day of love, but I would argue there are more who do than don't.  Call me a cynic. Phil and I are NOT the type to conform to obligatory anythings - let alone a holiday that is more about cliche's than true, genuine love.  I have let him off the hook for the past 12 of the 13 Valentine's we have spent together.  I always tell him, "Be a good husband to me the rest of the year and you will NEVER have to do anything for me on Valentine's Day."  Done.  And he has absolutely kept his end of the bargain.  He is a remarkable husband who has built me into the woman I am today.  We talk frequently of our ability to create "better" in one another.  As my last post relayed, that is what this life is about.  Becoming better.  I know him, sometimes better than he knows himself, and if he were to get silly on me a buy me a teddy bear inside a balloon, holding a rose, I would question... "What the hell?"

However, there is a dear, sweet and adorable couple we are close friends with.  Their relationship is different from our (as each is).  The husband is FULL of romance and surprises and sweet sentiment year round.  So is it a surprise he showers his lovely bride with incredible and thoughtful gifts on this special day? No.  Because that is simply who he is and how he's been for the 15 years of their relationship.  He is being true to himself instead of filling an obligatory mold of how he thinks he should be.  It comes down to being genuine to yourself, your spouse, and your relationship.

Now, I am not speaking poorly of my husband by any means.  He is by far the GREATEST MAN I have and will ever know.  I am HONORED to call myself his wife.  He knows my love and admiration run very deep for him, because on any given week, at any given moment, we remind one another of this.  My husband is incredibly emotional, tender-hearted, and honest.  I would not trade any of those things for an overpriced gift.  He surprises me periodically with kind deeds that are random, unexpected, and genuinely from his heart.  Our relationship is full of passion, intensity, heart-igniting love and in-your-face reality.  We aren't fake with each other because we can't be.  We know each other too well.

The BIGGEST lesson I have learned in the short 13+ years of my relationship with Phil is:

I must be WORTHY of the kind of man I expect him to be.  If he is doing things I don't like, I have some work to do - not on him, but on ME.  If I am not feeling loved or appreciated, I need to show more love and appreciation to him.  Do unto others... remember??  I also need to speak in a conducive, respectful, and non-blaming way about needs I have in our relationship and how he can fulfill them.  Better, not worse, remember??  --feeling like a bit of a counselor right now--

He sent me a text this morning saying, "Happy Valentine's Day.  Sorry."  I responded like any "typical" woman would. "You are such a douche!!! I can't believe you forgot this day.  One of the MOST IMPORTANT days for our relationship.  I am going to be pissed, not talk to you, and withhold sex for the next week just to remind you what a douche you really are!!"

Seriously.  If this is you.  Stop reading this.  Go into the bathroom.  Look at yourself in the mirror.  And slap the SHIT out of yourself.

WTF???

If your man (or woman) forgets Valentine's day and you get PISSED about it, I believe it says more about YOU and your relationship, than about the other person. Go back.  Look in the mirror and ask yourself, WTF???  WTF am I getting so pissed off about it?  Its time to get real.  I mean it.  Why aren't you getting what you want?  What's going on in your relationship that you feel you NEED and/or DESERVE this holiday?  Are you unappreciated the rest of the year and expect this one day to validate your devotion?  Do you have false and/or unspoken expectations of your partner?  What can YOU do about it? How can YOU make it better?  Its time to own up to your shit.

And, if after all that self-talk you still have no resolution and put it all on the other person?? Well... B-B-C.

YE will be tested

When you begin this journey toward a better self, no matter the motivation, goal, or plan you have in place, there will always, ALWAYS be things you don't plan for.  Things you don't foresee.  Challenges you must overcome.  It is in the face of these challenges our focus, our determination, or desire to be better is tested.  How bad do you want this?  How important is this to you?  How deep are you willing to dig to find the person inside you were CREATED to be?  The person who's destiny is the one you seek instead of the one you previously settled for.  You are pressed against a wall, backed into a corner, forced to deal with all things you formerly repressed, have to re-evaluate who YOU are, what YOU control and how YOU will react.

There are ultimately two choices in every test:

1) Cower down and take the beating.  Pray that it isn't as bad as it shows itself to be.  Pray you can recover.  Hope it is over sooner than later. Then take your beaten down, broken self back to the recovery room, lick your wounds and let the victim become you.  Avoid looking in the mirror.  Avoid honest, heartfelt self-reflection.  Blame everyone and everything for what you have become.  Find excuses for the mediocrity you have accepted in yourself.  Be nothing more than...

OR
2) When backed into that corner, decide you are better than this small, confined space you have allowed yourself to be forced into.  Confront whatever is pushing you there.  Find your voice.  Find your power.  Ignite your flame and LIGHT IT UP.  Come out swinging with all the strength you can muster.  Know that the simple act of fighting back gives you control and you are no longer in the corner.  The forces that put you there are NOT stronger than you.  Your weakness is what allowed you to be pushed there and your inner strength is what will free you.  Know, with certainty, that your power is YOURS to be taken back or given away.  Take it back and use it. Use it to re-sculpt your mind, your body and your spirit to be one of greatness.
I am learning many lessons as I travel along my own path of self-edification.  I am learning first and foremost that nothing, aside from what I personally do, think, and say is about me.  Secondly, I need to stop judging others.  Period.  Third, I must not be ashamed of my destiny.  And number four (so far), is choose wisely.

1) This first lesson is typically initiated around the age of 8, when we begin to realize that even though we go to bed, the world does not stop moving.  Kids on the playground do not stop playing just because I fell and scraped my knee.  Hardly any will anyone notice if I just scored a basket, even though it is the highlight of my day.  Unfortunately, this lesson takes a lifetime to learn.  I am still in the elementary stages of this lesson, though I am hoping to keep progressing and eventually graduate.  It is not about ME.  The only thing that is about me:  ME.  And even then, its not really.  See the difficulty in this lesson?

2) The second lesson, again, is a lifetime in the making.  This lesson is much more difficult because it is a natural part of the human psyche to make judgements.  It, essentially, is related to our survivability (i.e., everyone is jumping off this cliff. I looks pretty high and I don't see anyone moving below.  Maybe I shouldn't jump off the cliff.)  When judging others, as opposed to situations, there are numerous other factors that are beyond our knowledge scope that must be considered before we can make an accurate judgement.  Because MOST of these factors will forever remain outside our knowledge scope (i.e. we are not God), it becomes very difficult for us to make accurate judgements of others.  **For the sake of {avoiding} debate, I will go ahead and point out the obvious that we have to judge others in order for survivability as well.  Meaning, I don't get into a car with strange men because I don't want be raped and cut up into pieces or made into a skin suit. Duh.  If this is your argument.  Ok.  You win.**  I am speaking from a relationship stand point.  I will not judge others for the sake of finding "wrongs".  Let's be real and honest.  If a person is looking for fault in others, it will forever be present.  We are, in fact, human.  Are we not? I would argue it takes a more heightened sense of self to accept the faults in others.
3) I firmly believe in the reality of creation.  If you do not, well, I am sorry.  I will not debate this.  Please don't bother.  As I learn about the intricacies of the human body, I am slapped in the face repeatedly with how incredibly and perfectly designed we are.  From a physiological stand point, I cannot argue enough the amazing design of our physical systems and how they all align together.  To bring in the emotional and psychological aspects as well is overwhelming.  Knowing this, I have come to realize that there is incredible GREATNESS in each and every one of us.  A lifetime of choices chisels away at that potential and either reveals it in full beauty, partial beauty or become a distorted version, some closer to their potential than others.  In order to achieve this greatness, our mind, our heart and our body all have to be in alignment with its purpose.  This is what I am working toward.  I have found that my acceptance of this has ignited others to find their own.  They find inspiration to achieve the life, the destiny they were created for, just as I am constantly inspired by others who do the same.  Yet there will always be those who do not like this.  They do not want to be reminded of the "distorted version" they are half-heartedly chiseling away at.  They don't want any pony drawing to look prettier than theirs, to draw more attention, or to be more colorful.  They encourage us to contain our joy, our passion, our fire for the simple reason they don't want to feel bad for choosing easy.
4) I am also realizing that life is full of choices.  We choose how intensely to seek our destiny.  The higher the level of intensity, the more difficult it can be.  Greatness is not easy.  It never will be. Easy is essentially the counterpoint of greatness.  Easy brings comfort, a lackadaisical approach, and no degree of difficulty.  However, it is in the struggle that greatness is allowed to show itself.  Just as diamonds are forged through great pressure, with time, so is the greatness of the human being - body, mind, and spirit.  We choose how to handle the pressure, whom to use for support, whom to rely on, and even whom to ignore.  The people we invite into our lives is also a choice.  This can be very difficult as well.  You see, each one of them serves a purpose and we don't always want to know it.  Some of their purposes we don't like because it makes us uncomfortable.  We have to examine who we are, what we are trying to accomplish, and how we want to execute it.  Our own faults are revealed and we are forced to settle for the acceptance of these faults or do the incredibly uncomfortable work of changing them.  We also choose when to let them go.  We have a choice in everything and everyone in our life.  We may not choose the external, but we absolutely choose the internal.  Something happens at work you don't like?  You choose how to react.  Someone says something you don't like.  You choose how to respond.  The mirror doesn't lie either and when we are real and honest with ourselves, we choose how to proceed.
Yesterday was a difficult day in our house and it simply felt like there was not enough.  Not enough time in the day, not enough patience, not enough food, not enough daylight, not enough energy, not enough... It was rough.  I knew today would be just as packed full of responsibilities, to dos, and expectations.  So I made a choice.  I chose to make MORE out of my day in order to create something better.  I was up at 4:10am to get a solid workout in.  My driveway was shoveled by 6:15, I was out the door with children to have a productive morning by 8:40.  I spent time with people who are important to me, got to have some one on one time with my daughter {who desperately needed it} and even made time for this - a blog post.  I write this not to bring focus to myself, because I am just like the millions of other moms out there who do this everyday and those millions probably do many of these things better than I.  My point is the choice.  I actively chose to be better today than yesterday.  You can to.  Whether that means you {finally!} get up early to workout, you take the time to pack your food for the day, you call a friend who has been on your heart, or you let go of self-imposed limitations.  No matter what, the choice is yours.  And sometimes it might take someone "calling you out" for you to realize that maybe, at some point, you made the wrong choice, but it can still turn into something great.  Use all of it, everything, to be better.  Use it to chisel away the GREATNESS inside just waiting to be revealed.

I am no where near any evidence of greatness, but knowing that I am pursuing it keeps me focused on what is important, where I am headed, and following a plan {HIS plan} to get there.  So here's to us: living a life far less comfortable but infinitely more rewarding.  Let's strap on our boxing gloves, take a deep breath, and charge out swingin'!

It is time.

Its that time of year when everyone commits to making a better version of themselves that last about as long as... well... I can think of lots of things.  A bacon guacamole cheeseburger on my cheat day, a HIIT cardio session, a quickie, a gas pump, a weekly visit to Costco {wait... that may be longer...}.  My point is that regardless of our good intentions, the fact that it is {almost} a new year should really have no bearing on our desire to be better.  Why then?  Why not now?  Why does it have to be January 1st - or in many cases January 2nd because January 1st is not only New Year's Day but also National Hangover Day.  You didn't know that?

I could get into the deep philosophical rhetoric or psychological torment behind these reasons.  But I'll be honest... I was leg day today and I really don't have it in me to type that much.  I need more carbs.

Here is my point: The desire to be better is in all of us.  The only ones who actually become better are the ones with the mental fortitude to overcome challenges, whatever they may be, and push through.  It is not a physical matter.  It is mental.  You want to quit smoking; You want to lose weight; You want to be a better spouse/friend/parent/etc.; You want to make a career change; You simply want more out of life.  All of these things come with their own challenges.  Some are physical, some are mental, some are emotional/spiritual.  But at the root of all these desires is a single common thread.  The actually achieve these things, it requires more internal strength than anything else.  You have to decide you will be whatever it is you are working towards.  You have to already be that in your head.  You have to commit.

I was at the gym today and witness a moment like this.  There was a young girl (I am guessing a sophomore in high school, based on her shirt) who was attempting, for what looked like the FIRST TIME EVER to work out.  Her boyfriend was trying to help her, but she struggled.  In one single moment, this girl completely shut down.  She decided in her mind she couldn't do it.  In between my stiff-leg dead lift sets, I watched her go from eager, to embarrassed, to defeated.  In less than 5 minutes.  I couldn't bare it.  I knew that feeling.  I had been there.  I went over to her {as she cried on her boyfriend's shoulder} and tried to give her a pep talk.

Can I just say, from one girl to another... Don't give up.  Don't let this machine beat you.  You are here, trying something new, which is AWESOME.  There are so many better things you can do than this dumb machine to work your legs (I referred to the leg press she couldn't operate).  If you need help, I would be happy to show you.  Try that thing there (pointing to the Smith Machine).  That will be awesome for you legs and your butt if you do squats. Its much easier than this stupid thing who no one can figure out, by the way.  That's why no one was using it...  But don't get defeated. You can do this!!

I walked away, after a "thank you" and watched her boyfriend try and motivate her some more.  And you know what?  She did it!  She moved onto squats and did great!  I felt so proud of her!!  She could have let a big hunk of equipment get the best of her, give her a complex about being "too weak" to lift weights or whatever.  But she didn't!  She tried again!

That is really what this is all about.  Not letting some dumb machine (or boss, or mental block, or whatever dumb excuse we have clung too) beat us!  We are better than that!  We are capable of remarkable things!  We just have to give ourselves the opportunity to rise to the challenge instead of backing away.

So here you are.  On Friday, December 28th. Three days before the new year.  What are you going to do?  Wait for "the" day to change.  Wait for tomorrow?  F&^k tomorrow.  Now.  Decide NOW.  Look at yourself in the mirror and DECIDE.  Who are you and what are you capable of becoming?

So I am throwing myself out there.  It is time to commit.  I will do this.

For the first time ever, I am going to begin taking coaching clients.  YES.  Many of you have email/txt/msg me with lots of questions and I am SO happy to respond.  But I am also learning that many people don't really know the basics.  So that's what I am here for.  To help.  You can be local or out of town.  It doesn't matter.  WE can do this and make it successful with BOTH of us committed.  So here's the details:

1.  You need to commit to me for three months.  You don't have to pay for three months all at once, just one month at a time.  If at anytime, you are unhappy with your progress or results, you are done!  No more months.

2.  If you are local, you need to sign up for my Healthy Living 101 class.  I linked the info.  Without a solid foundation of understanding, you will never be able to stand on your own, without me.  I want to empower you to take your health and fitness in your own hands.  Eventually, I don't want you to need me {except maybe as a resource... or friend!}

3.  I will not take more than 5 clients at this time. {first come, first served}  However, I will screen you because, lets be honest, I don't want to waste either your money or my time.  After our first one-on-one consult, I will know if you are really ready.

4. You must follow both the workout plan and the nutrition plan.  They are both incremental pieces to a healthier you.

I will tailor my plans for what you need.  If you need me to take you grocery shopping, I will.  If you need me to help clean out your cupboards and fridge, I will.  But I will only put as much into this as you do.  Remember, I have three children, a husband, graduate school, a third grade classroom, and a national figure competition, all of which need my attention.  I am ready for the challenge, but are you?

If you are ready to commit, the cost is $100/month.  This includes a personalized nutrition and exercise plan, based on what you like and where you are at.  If you are local, we will meet for an initial consultation and I will take you through your first workout (at your gym), so you understand the level of intensity you should be training at, follow proper form, etc.  If you are out of town, we will do a video chat.

I am willing to commit to you... Are YOU willing to commit to YOU?  Email me if it is time.

What the HELL is wrong with people?

Or rather... What the HELL is wrong with ME.  Let me paint a picture.

Woman in her early 30's arrives at local, neighborhood gym, eager to WORK.  It is chest and arm day today.  She had her preworkout ~ 20 minutes ago so once she is done with her warm-up on the treadmill and a warm-up set, it should be prime muscle-building time!  She is ready.  She is focused.  She is determined.

As she enters the gym, she makes a sharp left turn and heads directly to the weight room.  Nope.  No other females there... as usual.  They are all spinning their wheels on elliptical machines, not realizing if they exerted the same amount of effort with some weights, they would actually begin to see results.  But she can't tell them that.  They have to figure it out on their own.  She drops her *NEW* Versa Grips (BEST invention EVER!!!), her water bottle and phone in an  undisturbed corner.  Warm-up time.

After her warm-up, she begins with a chest press warm-up.  As she grabs the 35lb. dumbbells, she happens to look up at the clock.  3:15.  Shit.  That explains the pubescent boys wearing horribly cut t-shirts with biceps smaller than hers.  OK, boys.  Saddle up!  Its time for a lesson in WORK.  Set 1 down.  Onto 40lbs.  Then 45, then 50.  Chest press done.  As she drops her weights back where they belong, she notices some of them are surprised... Surprised to see (1) a woman in the weight room grabbing something heavier than 10lbs. or (2) a woman actually WORK HARD and STRUGGLE while lifting.  There is heavy breathing, maybe some subtle grunts, and even a sporadic (but frequent) swear word.  Yes, boys.  I came here to work, not to gawk at your skin wrapped skeleton.  But thanks for the comic relief.  It is motivating me to "school" you.  I have 90 minutes to make as much progress as possible because baby boy is home, asleep while big sister is on watch.  I know what time he wakes up, everyday, and it is 10 minutes after I have to be done.  No time to mess around.  No time to play.

She jokingly teases one of the young men as she returns from filling her water bottle... "I see you eyein' my weights over here..." with a smile.  As awkward as awkward can be, he says, "No, its okay.  I'll get them when you are done."  Yes you will.  But in the meantime, stop standing around, flexing your underdeveloped skin flaps, texting whatever random girl, and do some work!

Half-way through her workout, a non-pubescent MAN happens to be sitting near the 45lb. plate she needs for tricep bench dips. "Excuse me..." she says politely.  "I need to grab that."  "Oh, sorry." He replies back.  But as he says these words, she notices a hesitation in his face.  He wants to say more, but is not confident in his thought.  "Ummm....."  She pauses, holding the 45lb. plate. "Can I ask you a question?" "Sure." She replies.  Then the qualification begins...

"This is probably something that will get me slapped... or might get me slapped, but I should ask it anyway..."
Again, pausing holding an increasingly heavier 45lb. plate... "OK.  What?"
"I have to know.  Did you just have a baby or are you pregnant?"

-- silence --

"Under normal circumstances, you're right.  You would get slapped."  She begins to walk away.
"Soooooooooooooooooo..... No?"
"No."
"Did you just have a baby?"
"I have a year and a half little boy."
"Oh.  Well, that takes a long time to recover from, though."

-- silence --

"I think I'm going to workout a little harder now..."  as she walks away, veins popping in her shoulders and forehead.

No eye contact was made for the remainder of this scene.  Just LOTS of internal swearing, more heavy breathing, louder grunting, and a horribly deflated ego.

This was not the first time someone thought I was pregnant when in fact I was NOT.  HERE is a post I wrote... oh and, of course, HERE.  Both of these are from my personal/family blog I used to write before I made the switch to {Fit} Mom Diary.  If you are curious about my whole journey... THIS is where it began.

I write this all in jest, though the situation is ENTIRELY true.  It JUST happened a few days ago.  It needed to happen though.  It was good to be caught off guard, have a reality check, and be knocked down a few rungs.  I am not a total and complete bad ass.  I may think I am in the midst of a workout only because I NEED to feel that way.  It is fuel for my work.  I NEVER, NEVER try to make anyone feel bad about the fact that they are new, uncomfortable or unfamiliar with the gym.  I am ALWAYS excited to see new people there, especially if they are female!  I tend to offer encouragement and support instead of intimidation and degradation.

But... for this guys... this person who is capable of forming complete sentences but has an inability to actually think... I would have liked to say some other things.  Well... maybe not.  I bet he felt horribly embarrassed to realize he was wrong.  I bet he felt terrible as I walked away.  Well... maybe not.  I am just glad that it happened to me, a woman who feels very comfortable in her own skin, no matter how bloated or saggy it may look, instead of a woman new to the gym, trying to make a go of this whole "fit" thing.

I am also grateful it happened because it really got my thinking.  First, it got me thinking some really angry, horrible words that didn't come out of my mouth, but then I really started to look at myself.  Do I look pregnant?  I know this seems like a totally erroneous question and undermines the very self-confidence I am trying to build, but let me explain.  My stomach has issues.

Not bathroom issues, which I have written about HERE and HERE.  But real issues.  Even my trainer has asked on multiple occasions, "What's up with your stomach?"  The only way to explain is with pictures.

Here I am, approximately 9% body fat.  Shoulders, legs, back, they all look great.  But... look at my stomach.  I still looks like I have a "gut".  To a normal person, yes, that may sound crazy.  But looking at it logically, why does my stomach poke out more than anyone else?  Is it genetics?  Is is because my abs were blown out from three babies?  I couldn't figure it out.

So, what do I do when I need answers?  What does any good Exercise Science graduate student do?  They research.  That is exactly what I did.  By the way, this has become my solution to solving all the great problems of the world.  What do I make for dinner?  Research it.  How do I keep my house clean?  Research it.  What can I do to make my face look like a Victoria's Secret model?  Research it.  How do I keep a little boy from destroying my house top to bottom between breakfast and lunchtime over Christmas break?  Research it.  Why do people think I am pregnant? Research it.

The first step was to ascertain that NO, I was not in fact pregnant.  Done.  Next step was to figure out what else it could be.  Did something happen to my body while growing babies that has forever ruined my chances for a flat stomach?  Honestly, yes.

My hand gets lost in the Mid-Atlantic trench.

Because I pay attention to my body, I knew that after Olivia, my abdominal wall never actually healed back together.  I always had this "ridge" in the middle.  Not like an awesome 6-pack ridge, but a deep crevasse like the mid-Atlantic trench.  So deep, that if I pushed down far enough, I could feel my pulse very aggressively through my stomach.  Not from my heart, but from my descending aorta {very LARGE blood vessel that travels out of your heart and takes blood to the lower half of the body}.  I could feel it.  Yikes.  Big trench.  So I read some more.

When women are pregnant and either have multiple pregnancies, large babies, or are already overweight, they run the risk of having abdominal separation, known as Diastasis Recti.  The outer abdominalS separate, making room for a growing baby and many times (unless treated with proper exercise/therapy) don't close.  That is what happened to me.  Diastasis Recti.

Preggo belly - NOT.

This often leaves the blob on the belly (like I have) and the only thing holding your innards together are weak connective tissue and weak Transverse abdominalS (the deepest layer in your core - acts like a girdle).  Often times, hernias appear, especially around the belly button.  My girdle is broken.  I am pretty sure I have an umbilical hernia and I look... well... pregnant.  It gets worse with carbs too {or if its been a while since my last visit to the bathroom}.  It completely makes sense because these things make any normal abdomen swell, and mine is exponentially expanded because I don't have a tight core to hold it in.

Ok, sir.  You are forgiven for your lack of IQ.  But this is your only "get out of jail" pass.  Next time...

The good news:  apparently it can be repaired.  There are two options: exercise/therapy or surgery.

The bad news: The exercise/therapy requires an abdominal splint, therapy movements and some other things (like no exercise and limited sex for 6 weeks?!?!?!). The surgery is basically a "tummy tuck".  I don't want a tummy tuck, I can't stop exercising, nor can I live with a man who is deprived for 6 weeks.  I would die.  He would die.  Our kids would die.  There is just too much stress in our lives to prohibit any type of stress relief that needs to occur - in the weight room or bedroom.

Lean back and you can see the split
open up around my navel
So what now?  I don't know.  I am going to try the splint and therapy moves, but I don't think my condition is grave enough that I need to stop exercising or limit other activities.  I will just be walking around with what looks like a back brace for the next 6-18 weeks.  I have to live in this thing, workout in this thing, even SLEEP in this thing.  And its NOT cheap.  I will be calling my dr. for an official prognosis (since I am only, at best, guessing this is really the source of the problem) and see what insurance is willing to cover.  I have read this also causes low back pain (check!), weak pelvic floor (check!), and spinal misalignment (check!).

More bad news... all those crunches, v-ups, roman chairs, etc. that I have been doing to "strengthen" my core have actually been making the trench worse.  They engage the top abdominals, causing them to pull outward and widen the gap.  Oh, great.  So none of those until my mid-Atlantic trench becomes just a crack in the dirt.  Wish me luck!

Oh, and Eli was born with this same condition.  I guess it can be hereditary, and can occur in men as well.  Who knew???

If you have similar issues with your body, know that though diet is a LARGE portion of getting a flat tummy, there are ways to check if you do, in fact, have Diastasis Recti.  HERE is a video to check.
